What is the best electric power washer for home use for the money?

We are well into the hottest, most humid days of summer.  Our outdoor furniture is coated with the melted remains of ice cream cones and hardened barbecue sauce, the sides of our houses are growing mold, and our decks have colonies of mildew consuming the beautiful hardwood that we grew to love.  Summer is taking its toll and it is time to fight back one highly pressurized gallon of water at a time! I set out to find the best electric power washer for the money and ultimately settled on the Sun Joe SPX3000.

It used to be that pressure washing was a major pain that required a trip to a hardware store, a tool rental shop, or the use of an expensive professional cleaning team.  The washers were noisy, gas powered, and either too rough for soft plastics or too under-powered for cement and hardwood decks.  Breakthroughs in electric motor technology changed all of that in the past few years and there are now some truly awesome electric power washers competing for your business on the home market.

These washers do not produce the fumes that old gas powered washers were known for and they are adjustable, so you can tackle a huge range of projects without needing to pause for so much as a minute as you switch between washers.

I’ve done the market research and narrowed down the competitive field to four electric power washers.  These washers come in different sizes and power ratings, but they all do one thing – bust dirt and grime on a range of surfaces and leave you feeling cleaner than ever.

Top Electric Pressure Washers for Home Use

The Benefits of an Electric Power Washer

Electric power washers are not in common use by commercial power washers because they tend to lack the power of industrial gas powered washers and require a place to plug in.  Why should you consider using one if the professionals don’t?  Simple – cost, ease of use, and portability all make electric power washers a natural choice for home owners occasionally needing a pressure washer.

Gas powered washers are expensive to rent, buy, operate, and maintain.  The going price for a typical residential gas powered washer is around $250.00, with many models costing significantly more.  The washers require maintenance, lubrication, and have more moving parts than their electric counterparts.

While the typical gas powered washer delivers more power than their electric powered counterparts, most residential home owners will not really benefit enough from the power to make up for the extra sticker price.  Because electric pressure washers do not require lubrication or preventative maintenance, they are an obvious choice for someone looking to tuck it neatly away in the corner of a garage until the next big project.

Ease of use and portability are major concerns favoring electric powered washers.  Gas powered washers are heavy!  They almost all tip the scales at somewhere between 60 lbs – 75 lbs and cannot be removed from their attached cart.  This may not be a problem if you are focusing on large scale jobs, like cleaning the side of a house, a large patio, or a deck, but it is a serious problem if you are trying to clean hard-to-reach places like the roof of an RV or the inside of a house.

Because most electric pressure washers generally weigh well under 40 pounds, produce no emissions, and are far quieter than their gas counterparts, they are able to serve a broader range of needs for a typical residential purchaser.

What Makes a Good Pressure Washing System Great?

Versatility is by far the single most important feature of an electric pressure washer.  It is no secret that you get what you pay for when it comes to tools and that means you are unlikely to get a professional grade product at a home user price.  That’s okay!  A phenomenal pressure washer will last a homeowner for years and will do everything you ever ask of it, within reason.

Because you are going to expect your pressure washer to help with auto detailing, roof cleaning, graffiti removal, deck restoration, and a host of other tasks, you need something that has included parts to help you accomplish all of these jobs.  Nozzles, extendable hoses, telescoping wands, and detailing attachments provide enormous functionality at a very reasonable price.

Finally, you need something that you can use.  A machine that is too heavy, cumbersome, or limited in reach by a short power cable does you no good.  Considering the physical limitations of the person using the machine and the limitations of the machine itself when buying a power washer helps you ensure that you have the right tool for the user.

If you are looking for the single best electric power washer on the market, you need look no further than the Sun Joe SPX3000.

Don’t let the tiny size fool you, this thing packs a serious punch and will get the job done for most non-commercial users.  The initial setup of the SPX3000 is extremely easy and most users report going from unpacking to spraying in fewer than 10 minutes.  As Amazon’s top selling electric pressure washer, this thing is knocking it out of the park!

The thigh-high, ultra-portable electric pressure washer draws water from an ordinary garden hose and delivers an unapologetically brutal 2,030 PSI of focused water pressure at the rate of 1.76 gallons per minute to your toughest stuck on stains, spots, and greases.  It is perfect for home users because it includes everything you need to tackle any project.  Five quick-connect spray tips are included to offer solid stream coverage for spot removal, 15, 25, and 40 degree stream for area cleaning, and a wide stream with soap support to clean RVs, houses, and soft materials.

Soap sets the SPX3000 apart from its competitors.  The washer has two detachable detergent tanks, each of which holds almost a full liter of detergent or degreaser.  You can effortlessly switch between the two detergents and change then out as you cycle between jobs.  It even has a feature that allows you to use both detergents simultaneously and to control the mix percentages with a simple flick of a dial.

The SPX3000 supports most detergents and pre-washes, so you are not limited to using expensive manufacturer produced soaps.  This comes in especially handy when you are dealing with mildews or moss growth and want to pre-soak the stain for better results.  The SPX3000 also gets the nod as the best-in-class electric pressure washer because it comes with a 34 inch extending spray wand and 20 foot high pressure hose.  The SPX3000 brings the pressure and the reach to the fight against dirt while the 2 year manufacturer warranty makes sure the washer is ready when you are.

Serious home users may want to consider purchasing the deck and patio cleaning attachment (SPX-PCA10) or the rotary wash brush kit (SPX-RB1) to support deeper, more effective cleaning of cars and other metallic surfaces.  For a MSRP of less than $200.00, the SPX3000 offers an enormous amount of capability and power for home users.  There are also a number of aftermarket attachments available due to the model’s popularity.

If you are looking for a way to kick start your summer routine, look no further.

GreenWorks GPW1702 – Cheaper Alternative

Key Specifications

  • 13 amp motor
  • 2 GPM flow at 1,700 PSI
  • 3 pounds
  • 22 x 24.02 x 13.19 inches
  • 35 ft power cable
  • 25 ft hose

  • Inexpensive
  • Extremely lightweight
  • Long power cable and hose

  • All plastic design subject to wear, tear, and breaking with heavy use
  • Lower PSI makes this compressor less than ideal for large projects or very deep cleaning
  • Installed detergent bottle flow is not adjustable

Homeowners looking for an affordable alternative offering reasonable performance for light duty tasks should seriously consider the GPW1702.  With a 1,700 PSI rated compressor, it shines at removing mildew, cleaning cars, and moderate spot cleaning.  To understand what really sets it apart from competing models, one need only to look at it.  It is tiny!  Weighing in at a featherweight 10 pounds, the GPW1702 is highly mobile, easily stored, and designed to be used by almost anyone, including kids and senior citizens.

GreenWorks offers this model in several different configurations.  Its base configuration is just a pressure washer with a 25 and 40 degree quick connect tip.  Other kits offer surface cleaners, turbo nozzles, hose extenders, and high pressure soap applicators for more complex tasks.  Admittedly, these more expensive offerings make the GPX1702 less attractive, as the added expense of the kits makes the 1,700 PSI power harder to tolerate in comparison to similarly priced models that boast higher compression rates.

The GPW17202 has one installed detergent tank that feeds a steady stream of soap, detergent, or pre-wash formula to any project.  The detergent flow cannot be adjusted and you cannot combine multiple tanks to provide better dirt busting power.  This is truly a reasonably priced high pressure washer that prioritizes ease of use, storage, and a user friendly layout over raw power.

Users expecting a more rugged design or significant cleaning power are likely to be disappointed, but if you are looking for something ultra-light that gives you a bit more cleaning power, makes washing your car faster, and can be stored in tight spaces, the GPX1702 is a highly affordable model that should be considered.

  • Only 1 detergent reservoir

Your kids should be afraid of the new monster in the garage.  The AR Blue Clean AR390SS is a beast that offers best in class power cleaning for non-commercial users.  The AR390SS is so good that it was the top rated electric pressure washer tested by Consumer Reports in 2016.  With an installed 48 oz detergent tank, 4 different quick connect nozzles, and a ferocious 2,000 PSI steady pressure rating, it can detail cars and refresh decks with the best of them. This unit is also extremely efficient, delivering 45% higher pressure with 80% less water than a normal garden hose.

The AR390SS really comes into its own when you couple it with the AR Blue Deck, Patio, & Flat Surface cleaner that is specifically designed to speed up the biggest cleaning jobs.  With that aftermarket attachment, the AR390SS will clean deck and patio surfaces between 60% – 80% faster than cleaners relying on just a standard wand.  The proprietary attachment contains waters, prevents overspray to protect softer materials adjacent to the area being cleaned, and ensures a uniform appearance across the cleaned surface.

The biggest complaint users have about the AR390SS is its weight.  At a meaty 42 pounds, this compressor is all business.  Its extended reach power cable and hose make reaching tough to clean areas easier, but this is not the unit for you if you are looking for a compact, easily stored unit.

If you are looking for a class leader that delivers uncompromising performance that competes with gas powered models, then this deserves serious consideration.

Powerhouse International Force 2000 – All-In-One Solution

Key Specifications

  • 3,000 PSI “Initial Power Burst”
  • Sustained pressure of 1,800 – 2,000 PSI
  • 33 x 11 x 12 inches
  • Made of plastic
  • 1 Year Warranty

  • “Initial Power Burst” feature makes spot cleaning easier than ever before
  • Easy to mount
  • Neutral color
  • Attachments for deck and patio cleaning, soap dispensing, and spot cleaning included
  • Installed adjustable nozzle does not require nozzle tip changes

  • Included mounting hardware is poor quality
  • Soap dispenser cannot switch between detergents during use
  • Limited 1 year warranty

The Powerhouse International Force 2000 lives up to its namesake and is a true powerhouse.  It snaps to life and gives users an initial 3,000 PSI burst of water to break dirt and grime like never before, only to drop down to a ferocious 1.6 GPM 2,000 PSI steady stream.  Unlike competing models, the Force 2000 has a fixed nozzle that is adjustable.  You can go from steady stream to wide area surface cleaning with a twist of the wrist!

Not only does the Force 2000 deliver tremendous power, it is the only all inclusive product I considered.  It includes the attachments needed to create an adjustable foam cannon for car washing and wide area deck and patio cleaning.

Our only complaint about the Force 2000 is that the plastic construction gives the unit a cheap feel and the high mounted hose reel combined with a relatively light device weight causes the compressor to tip over when the hose is tugged.  Besides that, the reviews are outstanding and this best seller can easily be recommended for someone looking for a do it all unit at an affordable price.

Alternatives I Can’t Recommend

Sun Joe SPX1000 – A sporty unit that offers 1,000 PSI pressure on demand, the SPX 1000 is just too under-powered for most uses.  It is a specialty unit that is too limited in utility to be considered as a viable all round electric pressure washer.  For this reason alone, it cannot be recommended for a first time buyer.

Summer is not over yet and there are still plenty of opportunities for your patios, RVs, cars, and roofs to get dirty.  Now is the time to strike back and blast built up grime and dirt away for a fraction of the price that commercial cleaning teams would charge.  The single best way to do this is with an electric power washer of your own.

The best one on the market is the Sun Joe SPX3000.  Simple, lightweight, powerful and affordable, it answers the call in the fight against grime.  It has a very reasonable price tag, outstanding warranty support, and a huge amount of aftermarket parts available to make it an all-round cleaning favorite.
