Summer has arrived! Whatever the ages within your family, it is likely we all will be spending more time outside. And that means it is time, to address that perennial garden chore – mowing the lawn. A clean and close crop is not only more pleasing to the eye, but the kid’s (or your) toys are also less likely to get lost. A freshly mown lawn will help keep the back-yard a safer area for those summertime frolics.
No matter if you are a BBQ maestro, a budding ultimate Frisbee champion, or just inclined to sit back and savor a few drinks in the sun, a well kempt lawn is bound to help set the scene. Stop your garden becoming an untamed wilderness with my review of the three best corded electric lawn mowers for the money.
Consistently ranking high in reviews; my most highly recommended corded lawnmower to ensure you reclaim your lawn is the GreenWorks 25022. Its four different cutting heights ensures a pristine lawn, perfect for even the most sporadic gardener. But its crowning glory is its (yes, you guessed it) ability to float on a cushion of air; lending it the skills to be the most lightweight and maneuverable lawnmower going.
Forget hover cars and jet packs – the future, in lawn care, is here in a packaged ergonomically in a slick lightweight design. (Since, erm, well actually, 1965).
But first, a few ideas to keep in mind when planning your perfect corded lawnmower purchase.
Why choose a corded lawnmower over gas or battery powered models?
Electric lawnmowers are ideal for most of us with smaller to medium (think tennis court size or less) gardens as they are lightweight, easy to start, easy to use, with no complex service upkeep required as with gas engines. Slighter of stature, and less taxing on the environment compared to gas glugging designs, they tend to require less storage space as well. Corded lawnmowers, moreover, have a longer run time than their battery powered counterparts.
What helps a brilliant lawnmower to be ‘a cut above’ the competitors?
This depends on you! Or your lawn, rather. There are two main blade mechanisms to choose from with corded lawnmowers. When dealing with long, or wet grass, a rotary blade is suitable. Being the best blade type for sloped areas as well, it is by far the most versatile type of lawnmower. It is this type of lawnmower that, due to a rear roller behind a horizontally revolving blade, lets you produce the iconic striped lawn that will be the envy of your neighbors.
The second main type of corded mower is the cylinder lawnmower that cuts the grass between a rotating set and fixed blades with a scissor like mechanism. These will give a neat, polished finish, but need regular upkeep.
A third main type of mower comes with a rotary blade and works on a cushion of air that it blows out thereby gliding along with the least effort.
With all types of electric mowers it’s important that the mower have enough power to trudge through the type of grass you will be mowing. You’ll also want to ensure there is a mechanism for holding the extension cord securely to the handle and keep it out of the way.
As with any mower, an adjustable cut height is mandatory as well since different types of grass need to be cut to different lengths to remain strong and healthy. Finally, you want to make sure the mower can either cleanly discharge the clipped grass or capture it in a bag for disposal. Any mower that is prone to clumping will struggle to cut any lawn and is simply not worth the money, regardless of how cheap it is.
Whichever you choose, corded lawn mowers are the easiest to use. Simply plug it in and away you mow!

Not surprisingly, from GreenWorks, comes a powerful and lightweight design ready to power through any straggling grass. The height adjustment is well thought out, allowing even the most meager person to easily set the height. The handle is ergonomically formed. The wheels are sized up to allow easy pushing over a variety of terrains. Weight is low allowing for easy pushing up hills or along hillsides. The deck is metal, providing good durability against impacts. It has a strong, yet quiet motor. Finally, it folds up for compact storage.
It’s not perfect, however. There is no built in provision for tying back the power cord to prevent it from pulling loose. Instead you have to resort to wrapping it around the mid bar. The cord is also sold separately, which admittedly is a common thing with electric mowers. The mulching function has also been reported to be a little disappointing. None of these are things I would consider a deal breaker. They were definitely worth mentioning though.
In summary it’s a slick, well-crafted corded mower with a lightweight yet powerful design and a great pricepoint.

Surprisingly, no matter its toy like exterior, this is one not to judge on looks alone. The 12amp motor is more than strong enough to cut through well maintained lawns. Its light weight makes it easy to push up hills and along hillsides. The plastic cutting deck, though prone to damage from impact by sticks and stones, means rust will never be a problem. Time and time again customers were impressed by the tenacity of this little mower for the price.
The down sides noted for this product were its lack of durability, which can largely be avoided by not mowing over sticks and stones, and its lack of power when trying mow through extra tall neglected lawns. Some owners complained of the max cutting height not being enough for taller cuts on grasses such as St Augustine, commonly found in the southern states.
Provided you’re just looking to maintain a small to medium lawn and you don’t have problems with sticks, stumps, and stones throughout your turf, the Sun Joe MJ401e is a great electric mower for the money. Due to its light weight and maneuverability it would be my top pick for any seniors looking to maintain a small yard.

And to Summarize
As you may now deduce – maintaining an orderly, well-groomed and close-cropped lawn is more about matching the right tool to the job rather than any outstanding top mower.
All the featured mowers have rotary blades, and therefore should be ideal for the vast array of domestic lawns, with the odd overgrown meadow or two thrown in. Due to running on electricity, they are clean for the environment and require no extra gas, oil or pit stops.
You really can’t go wrong with any of the top three but the GreenWorks 25022 stands out as the best corded electric lawn mower for the money. Whether you’re mowing next to paths, under trees or up slopes its brilliant maneuverability will do it with ease. Plus with its lightweight design you might even have the energy to enjoy your clean and tidy lawn once you have finished! Or maybe, enough strength to open a drink or two. Here’s to a clean-cut summer!
