What really is the best touchless vacuum for the money?

One of the perpetual battles of the clean home is keeping it free of the dust, dirt, and hair that finds its way in. The desire to keep floors cleaned is always balanced against the time-consuming nature of cleaning them. Getting the nooks and crannies of a house rid of all the dust and dirt and hair and whatever else is a daunting task only made worse by kids and pets tracking dirt and shedding hair.

Luckily there is good news: the touchless vacuum. While getting a touchless vacuum cannot deep clean every inch of your house, they can certainly make keeping up with the vacuuming much easier.

If you’re simply looking for the best touchless vacuum for the money I highly recommend the Eyevac Pro. If you’re curios why, read below.

Touchless Vacuums: Not Just for Hair Salons

When I say, “touchless vacuum,” I’m not talking Roombas or other robotic vacuums. Instead, I’m referring to those devices you might have seen in hair salons that sit in the corner and suck up anything that comes near it. Touchless vacuums are stationary devices that work in tandem with a broom. You sweep the mess near it and it sucks up the mess with the help of a sensor. In very simplified terms, it’s an automatic dustpan but without the effort, mess, or lines of dirt on the floor.

Why You Should Look at a Touchless Vacuum

So how is a touchless vacuum really helpful? Well first it’s necessary to assess your needs. If you live with no pets, no kids, and never wear your shoes in the house, it may not be necessary for you. However, if you have shedding animals or minimal time for vacuuming that needs to be done every couple of days, this may be a handy device to have around. With one of these set up in a high traffic area of the home, it allows you to sweep small batches of dirt and hair up when you see it, changing your cleaning into short bursts of maintenance rather than a more time-consuming deep clean.

Of course, this is based on a solid assessment of your own needs. So before getting a touchless vacuum you should be asking yourself questions about what you’re looking for. What type of use are you hoping to get out of it? What type of debris are you looking for it to clean? Where would it be most beneficial? If you conclude that you’re looking for something to help with upkeep of that moderate to heavy mess of dirt and hair and small pieces of food from everyday life, then read on for some recommendations to get you started.

Below, I have pulled together a few readily available touchless vacuum products (all can be found on Amazon or their respective manufacturer’s site). Though touchless vacuums are no longer confined to hair salons, they are still a relatively niche product and there are very few options out there. The benefit of this small market is that what is available are a few good products, making it hard to really go wrong.

Nothing beats a classic and the Eye-Vac EVPRO is everything that is classic and functional. While it may not be as aesthetically pleasing as some of the other options, its moderate size makes it easy to place in any environment as it sits about the height of a stool or low coffee table.

More important than the aesthetics, however, is the function which the Eye-Vac Pro brings in abundance. It’s highly reviewed and rated on Amazon, with most people raving about how much it has eased vacuuming and cleaning up pet hair in particular. Pricing ranges from $119-129.00 (it runs a little cheaper on Amazon than on the Eye-Vac website) which is comparable to many quality vacuums, and it comes with a 1 year warranty.

Ultimately, I find the best selling points of the Eye-Vac Pro to be its capacity and bag-free canister. Most users have said they only need to empty the canister about once a week with regular usage. When you consider how much dirt, dust, hair, and debris that can accumulate in a week, that 1.6-gallon canister has a pretty hefty volume.

Additionally, the canister and filter are reusable and washable, meaning it’s not necessary to buy bags regularly which cuts down on waste and the cost of upkeep. Some users have mentioned the filters can be a bit difficult to empty but having an extra filter on hand (which comes in under $20) is an easy fix to the problem as one filter can be in the Eye-Vac Pro while the other is being washed.

The few complaints that come up around Eye-Vac Pro were largely about noise and a touchy automatic feature. The sensors on the Eye-Vac can be set to either manual or automatic, meaning it will turn on automatically if it senses something nearby. A few users have reported it turning on (when on the automatic setting) at odd hours when they were not using it. This complaint is relatively minor and solvable as there is the manual function if it’s a problem.

Similarly, there are some noise complaints, but most users say the noise level is no worse than a standard vacuum and is not a problem since the Eye-Vac Pro only runs when something is near it and does not, therefore, make constant noise.

I would like to note, that in researching this product, I also came across the Eye-Vac EVPRO-PW or Pet edition on Amazon. This product has the same spec, pricing, and style of the Eye-Vac Pro, the only real difference appearing to be a decorative paw print on the top. By all accounts, the Eye-Vac Pro and Pet are the same product so I did not include the EVPRO-PW as a separate product but if you come across it, it is a good product and not a knock-off.

Overall, I find the Eye-Vac Pro to be the best combination of simply functional and good economic value. Though it is listed as product for professional use, its functionality is perfect for the home or general office. It’s small enough to be placed easily without being in the way, and its capacity and sensors are designed for everyday uses and messes from things like cereal and pieces of food to hair and dust.

The Eye-Vac Home – The Aesthetic Option

EyeVac Home: Professional Clean for The...
  • FAST & POWERFUL: 1000 watt vacuum removes 100% of dust, hair...
  • CONVENIENT: Always on and always ready, EyeVac fits...
  • PERFECT FOR PET OWNERS & PARENTS: The EyeVac’s powerful...
  • HIGH EFFICIENCY FILTERS: Equipped with 2 high efficiency...
  • TOUCHLESS OPERATION: Infrared sensors detect the sweeping...

Key Specifications

  • Dimensions: 12 x 7 x 18 inches
  • Weight: 9 Ibs
  • Capacity: 6.2 liters/1.6 gallons
  • Motor: 1000 watt

  • Washable, reusable filter
  • Moderate size
  • Sleek design
  • Cheapest

  • Some sensor issues
  • Some efficiency sacrificed for design

If you’re looking for a product which a bit more attention to aesthetics, then the Eye-Vac Home might be a better route. The home version has the same capacity as the Eye-Vac Pro, but with a slightly smaller size and sleeker-looking design. It also comes in a little cheaper than the Eye-Vac Pro, with prices ranging from $92-109.00 (again, it runs a little cheaper on Amazon).

In general, the Eye-Vac Home stands up just as well as the Eye-Vac Pro. It’s an Amazon Best Choice item and has most of the same desirable features and manufacturing. Just like the Eye-Vac Pro, it uses washable and reusable filters, eliminating the need for bags, and has the same canister volume.

The motor is a little less powerful, but that does not seem to affect its performance as there are very little complaints about that. In fact, the only differences the Eye-Vac Home brings to the table, is a smaller size and more rounded design that might fit better with home décor. Very little that makes the Eye-Vac Pro so successful is lost on the Eye-Vac Home, making it a strong pick.

The only real issues with the Eye-Vac Home seem to be some complaints about the sensor. Some users have noted that the sensors have trouble reading darker colored bristles or brooms and therefore the vacuum does not automatically suck up the debris brought towards it. The Eye-Vac Home has the same switch between manual and automatic as the Eye-Vac Pro so the issue can be solved by going to manual, however it is a glitch to consider.

Additionally, there were a few complaints that the design of the Eye-Vac Home causes some things to get swept under the device instead of into the sensors to be cleaned up. It’s a relatively minor complaint, but does seem to be a point where some function was sacrificed for design.

Because of these complaints, I do not recommend the Eye-Vac Home as highly as the Eye-Vac Pro, but that does not mean that it is a product lacking in function or quality. It is overwhelmingly reviewed positively and its design and cheaper price are certainly attractive features.

The Hairvac is the quintessential hair salon touchless vacuum (unsurprising given its name) which is also the biggest caveat of my recommendation of this product. Hairvac is both a quality product and manufacturer, however, it is probably much more than is necessary for the home. It is really made as a commercial-grade product and should be considered as such.

Coming in at almost double the size of either Eye-Vac, the Hairvac is more the size and shape of a kitchen garbage bin meaning it is still reasonably easy to place in a home. The bigger size and capacity (7 gallons) comes with a much bigger price tag, with the Hairvac running from $299-399.00 (again, it runs cheaper on Amazon). While it is pricey, the Hairvac is a very popular product that is tried and tested in the commercial environment.

Beyond the price, I find the biggest drawback of the Hairvac to be the cost of upkeep. Unlike either Eye-Vac, the Hairvac uses bags rather than reusable filters and canisters. One of the biggest complaints with the Hairvac is the cost of the bags which cost about $25 for a pack of three on Amazon.

Other than the cost of upkeep, the Hairvac is a quality product that is very popular in its target audience.

Ultimately, recommending the Hairvac is really based your own needs. For most everyday messes the Hairvac seems more than necessary in both price and size, however, if you’re looking for a product for more of a commercial (or just really really messy) setting, then the Hairvac could be worth the investment.

Alternatives I Can’t Recommend…

Touchless vacuums are such a niche product that there are very few readily available options beyond those listed above. In a lot of ways that’s good news since you can’t really go wrong. However, if you are looking for something different, I would caution against a lesser-known product such as the HairJet (which can be found on Amazon).

Because touchless vacuums were initially created for the specific needs of the hair salon, some of the products available are not adapted to the home or other uses. The HairJet, for instance, is a wall mounted unit with multiple attachments; so even though it does have a reasonably effective touchless aspect to it, it’s a much more cumbersome device than is worthwhile.

The HairJet is priced similarly to the Hairvac but without the maneuverability and expanded functionality of the Hairvac of Eye-Vac products. In general, wall-mounted or attachment laden products defeat the purpose of a touchless vacuum.

A touchless vacuum can be a great way to cut down on the time and effort of cleaning and vacuuming the home. If you’re looking for something to help maintain cleanliness in the face of kids and pets, these are some very worthwhile products to consider.

The Eye-Vac Pro is the best combination of functionality, design, and price to meet the needs of the everyday mess but it is certainly not the only option. Either Eye-Vac or Hairvac can provide you with a touchless vacuum to meet your needs and your messes so that you can spend less time with the vacuum and more time doing something you actually enjoy.

I agree! These advancements in technology recently have been really great in improving our appliances such as vacuums, and they really do provide us a lot more convenience. Just wanted to ask though, would this type of vacuum be applicable for your carpet cleaning guide? Just wanted to know. Thanks!
